‘We are the memories we don’t remember’

Maddie Resmer, is a mixed-Algonquin artist; Bear Clan from The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and Kitigan Zibi Anishinaabeg First Nation. Resmer shares this statement with insideWaterloo.

Our histories as Indigenous people are held in the earth, and her closest extension, our bodies. Our ancestral memories move like water, like blood, through soil and debris. Below schools, below churches, below statues. We hold our loved ones, our forgotten, discarded ones, in the marrow of our bones and in the stars of our sky.
